Game Completion 2020 #14 – Resident Evil 2 (2019)
- Platform: PC
- Developer: Capcom
- Publisher: Capcom
I bailed early on the Resident Evil 2 remake on PS4 shortly after its release last year, finding myself forced to drop it to focus on important Switch releases for the Switch Focus Podcast. I sadly never returned to it.
With one eye on the Resident Evil 3 remake, however, I picked up the almost-entire series on PC on sale just over a week ago, and restarted RE2 there last week.
This remake, then, is an enjoyably tense, chilling re-imagining of a game I’ve always utterly adored and it mostly lived up to both my nostalgia and my childhood imagination. It’s wild to see the spirit of those old pre-rendered screens now fully-realised in a 3D explorable world, and along with all its terrors.
I had a few problems with it, including some timeline inconsistencies across Leon’s first run and Claire’s second, which are considered to be the canonical sides of the same coin (to be fair, this was the same on the PS One original too), and how the infamous Mr X went from terrifying in one campaign to tiring in the next.
Still, I enjoyed it a lot. On to Resident Evil 3make.
