Game Completion 2020 #69 – Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

  • Platform: PS5
  • Developer: Treyarch and Raven Software
  • Publisher: Activision

Decided to give this a go for two reasons. Firstly, the Modern Warfare reboot was pretty decent and did interesting things in regards to its subject matter, especially on the idea of sides in conflict. Secondly, I really wanted to try a shooter with the DualSense controller. Both things held up pretty well, though Cold War also pulls the same revisionism that tugged at Modern Warfare.

There were a couple of positive surprises in Cold War, however. Allowing me to make important decisions that affect the story was not something I expected from a series that largely keeps you on rails. I also wasn’t expecting to need to grab a physical pen and paper to solve puzzles to get access to (and the best results) side missions.

Overall, I think I’m just enjoying the mindless rhythm of CoD again after swearing off it for years. The core mechanics, as they’ve always been, are just dumb fun.
