Game Completion 2021 #14 – Hellpoint
- Platform: Switch
- Developer: Cradle Games
- Publisher: Tiny Build
As a self-proclaimed ‘Soulslike’, Hellpoint’s inspiration is clear before you even boot up the game and is hammered home constantly when you do. As a fan of the subgenre, that’s not really a problem for me, and it does offer some worthwhile spins on the Dark Souls formula.
Unfortunately, those ideas are utterly betrayed by countless bugs and technical problems. Between constant software crashes (at least 4 or 5 a night), areas where sure hits would not land, and inconsistent framerates causing choppy combat, I had a frustrating time overall. In a genre where fine margins rule and every action counts, these problems made Hellpoint feel unfair in ways other Soulslikes don’t.
I’ve seen commitment from Cradle Games that they’ll fix the problems on Switch and, if they do, its ideas, systems and level design were about good enough to maybe tempt me back for a NG+ later down the line, but until then I don’t recommend.
